21st Of Mars is - Newroz - The Kurdish New Year of 2621

Kurdistannetwork - March 21, 2009
Today is the day the Kurdish leader Kawa defeated Zahak the evil Ruler of Medya (Ancient Kurdistan) and liberated the Kurdish People. This day is known as Newroz or Newday in English, a new start of an oppressed nation to be the ruler of their own land. They celebrated this occasion by lading big fires on to of the mountains and high points to mark there victory. Even to this day it is still celebrated in the same way with both tall and smaller fires. The small fires are jumped over by young people, this to symbolize leaving your past and moving forward to a better future. Kawa lived 2621 years ago therefore the Kurds celebrate the year of 2621.
Free Medya later became The Medyan Empire where the Kurds won lands far away from their current geographic location; in fact the Median Empire stretched itself all the way from current Greece to India, making it one of the Greatest Empires Ever. Median Empire like almost all the empires through out history started to have internal problems and power struggle. This resulted in that it slowly lost more and more land and even then main parts of Media or the central part (Kurdistan of today) became occupied by foreigners. The Kurds had to change their strategy and lifestyle to preserve their identity, language, culture and traditions such as Newroz.
Because of the different parts of Kurdistan was and still is occupied by different occupiers the Kurds since then fought their enemies on different fronts and often through tuff and organized guerilla warfare. They have gained several autonomies and independent states such as the Republic of Kurdistan in Mahabad or the autonomy of Welayeti Mosul. Unfortunately these states could not survive very long because of the lack of support from the world leading powers when often allying with the enemies of the Kurds instead of supporting their independence.
The Kurdish revolts have made them known to world as among the rugged and toughest people known to mankind. They are often referred to as a warrior race that can mobilize and organize themselves quickly. The main difference of their struggle compared to other nations who also seek self determination lie in their methods. The Kurds are known for not every distorting to terror action or targeting civilians of their opponents. Their occupiers try hard to make up stories and try to influence the world media to turn against the Kurdish nation but have failed. Today everyone is familiar with the Kurdish question and their struggle is very much legitimized world wide.
The fruit of these struggles can today be seen in all parts of Kurdistan and even outside Kurdistan. Today Kurdistan may not be independent but they have gained autonomy in Southern Kurdistan, the struggle of Northern Kurdistan has brought them into the Turkish parliament, in East Kurdistan the amount of Networks and Organizations has made them the greatest opposition to the current regime. Kurds in Diaspora and specially the intellectual elite in Sweden are among the most active and successful. They participate on all aspects of Swedish life, from the government to the media, giving birth to a new phenomena called media-kurds.
Newroz is a tradition that connects the Kurds world wide and reminds them of the times where they free of oppression. Kurdistan Network therefore wishes all the Kurds world wide a happy Newroz and independence for all parts of Kurdistan.
